Dr. Adam T. Cohen has been involved with ceramic and metal sculpture for over 50 years. Adam started his art career in 1969 and pursued it during his college studies. While attending college he was an assistant in both the ceramic and metal sculpture studios as a student teacher. Adam’s work has been exhibited in Oneonta, Woodstock, Roslyn and New York City. He had to take a 3 year hiatus from the arts while completing his veterinary studies after which he resumed his true passion. The story is quite unique in that Adam was hell bent on becoming a famous artist but was steered away from the career by his pragmatic mother and father who instilled in him the idea that once you have a career you could then relax with your art and be much more creative without the stress of trying to earn a living. Well that is exactly what happened and Adam’s work has evolved from his early teenage ideas to his now very distinctive style. This style is a culmination of years of experimentation and self development. All his pieces are complimented with his own personal glazes and pigments. His chemistry background has been a tremendous asset in the development of the beautiful glazes that adorn his pieces. Adam's unique work reflects his philosophy that the free form of the clay should contribute largely to the design of the art piece. He sculpts many natural flowing pieces that are eye pleasing and instill a comfortable feeling for the viewers. His work has been well received in the art loving community of Sarasota. His work has been exhibited at Mote Marine Art Show and many events at the Sarasota Arts Center, receiving an honorable mention on one occasion. He was selected in 2012 to be on the Fine Arts Society of Sarasota’s tour of artist studios. His work was very popular and well received helping make the tour a successful fund raising event. Presently Adam teaches and runs a ceramic studio in Sarasota, Florida . He works regularly in his 1600 square foot ceramic and metal studio equipped with a 100 cubic foot natural gas fired kiln. His stoneware sculptures are high fired to cone 10. Since retiring he is making a concerted effort to show his work and get the recognition he has dreamed of. Adam wants to help develop a new prospective for clay in the art world. He feels that the medium does not get the respect it deserves and he is out to change that!
